As previously reported, the self-proclaimed savior of boxing – and by extension, of boxing betting? – Oscar de la Hoya stated his displeasure regarding the Conor McGregor vs. Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather fight on Saturday, August 26th at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. It only makes sense that his client Canelo Alvarez and his client’s next opponent Gennady Golovkin have joined the chorus of boos. Alvarez and GGG have a date at that selfsame arena only three weeks later. Are they afraid Mac and Money will have stunk up the joint and three weeks is too short a time to de-funk it?
Boxing Betting Extravaganza
The crux of the matter is that Triple G vs. Canelo is a “real fight” for true (so much so they spell ‘true’ with a ‘v,’ like so: ‘trve’) fans – whether or not they bet on boxing – while McGregor vs. Mayweather is a “sideshow.” By way of comparison, Golovkin vs. Alvarez is the Steamboat-Savage to Mac vs. Money’s Hogan-Andre. But let’s see what American professional stock car racing driver and champion team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. has to say. “I don’t really care either way because I’m watching the (Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin) fight,” Earnhardt said on Tuesday’s episode of his podcast. “I’m not spending a dime on this Mayweather-McGregor mess. They got me on the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. They ain’t getting me again.” It’s safe to say he will not be spending his hard earned money on this boxing betting extravaganza.
Public Interest
But many other people will. Perhaps not people who usually bet on boxing, but “somebody interested in show,” as GGG told Sirius XM on Tuesday. “Conor with Floyd, this is a show. A business show or a funny show. This is not for boxing. This is for people, for business. My fight with “Canelo”, this is boxing. This is true, respected boxing, respect to the sport, this is true fight.” Meanwhile, Alvarez opined that Mayweather’s style is not everybody’s cup of tea – in particular “fans [who] want a little more action.” However, Canelo did “his style’s what’s difficult.” And he should know; Money beat him like a stepchild (he’s already redheaded) in 2013.
Golovkin
Golovkin clarified that he has nothing against Mac because he has made a name for himself in MMS – or as Earnhardt put it, “[McGregor’s] won some fights in the UFC” – but this will not be an MMA contest. “I respect McGregor as a UFC fighter. He’s not a boxer,” Triple G said. “He’s a good fighter, but he’s not a boxer.” As a people who bet on boxing know, Mayweather is not just a boxer, but an undefeated one (49-0) and one who has already defeated a ginger in the past. Maybe he has been hit in the head and developed a Thamyris complex. Or maybe he’s launching a real life line of Bad Idea Jeans to coincide with the fight. Even if that were the case, boxing betting experts know that whether he wins or loses – or regardless of how bad or how quickly he loses – his jeans’ pockets will be stuffed with green when all is said and done.
