Sportsbook look at the NL Wild Card Race

Sportsbook odds makers have seen plenty of shifting in the NL wild card landscape so far this season. The preseason sportsbook odds on the MLB post season looked considerably different that the current standings and with the pennant races heating up we could some very interesting sportsbook results.  In the NL with the Rockies, Giants and Cubs in the top spot to capture the wild card bid, it should be a very interesting finish to a very interesting MLB sports book season.

Sports book fans would not likely have expected these teams to inhabit the top spots in the NL wild card at this time of the season.  In the preseason, at least on paper, it seemed as if the Cubbies would be the NL Central champs (which they still might be before the sportsbook season is finished).  The Giants looked like they would be competitive in the sportsbook odds, but a post season bid looked like a stretch.  And the Rockies? They were little more than a sports book after thought.

But that’s why the games are played and that’s why the sports book odds makers have such a difficult job.  With over 90 games played in the sportsbook season so far the meat of the season is coming up.  Neither the Rockies nor the Giants are likely to catch the NL West leading Dodgers and so a wild card bid seems to be their best shot to reach the sportsbook postseason.  Both teams have relied on pitching for their sports book success, which for the Rockies is more than a sportsbook anomaly.

The Giants on the other hand have some big names and big time hurlers on their roster.  With three Cy Young winners on their staff their starters aren’t going to catch any batters by surprise.  The Rockies, though, have caught more than a few batters off guard in the past two months of the sportsbook action.  But whereas these two teams have effective pitching, their offense are relatively awful when compared with the rest of the sportsbook competition.

In that regard the Cubs are the better of the three teams, at least on paper.  Sportsbook odds makers like the team’s balance of quality pitching and its ability at the plate.  Still, the Cubs record of 47-44 trials both the Rockies (51-42) and the Giants (50-42).

But there’s a lot baseball left to be played and right now the NL wild card is anybody’s for the taking.  The only certainty in this uncertainty is that it should make for some great sportsbook betting as the steams to its exciting conclusion.
