Popular Teams in Baseball Lines

November 30, 2010 MLB Baseball

Baseball lines have popular teams just like football or basketball lines do.

With baseball odds you will find that teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets and others will be favored more so than they should be. Value is rarely found in baseball lines by going with the popular teams.

Baseball lines are money lines which means these public teams can and oftentimes do win. The problem is that they are so overvalued that when they lose you really take a hit. Following these teams you will see that very often value is not with them in baseball odds or with the public bettors that follow them.

The next time you are looking at fans of baseball look at all of the shirts and hats worn by Yankees fans, Red Sox fans or other major market teams.  Why is this important when you look at baseball lines? It is because it translates directly into overlays on the baseball lines as people who really don’t wager much on baseball will have no problem putting money on these teams as fans. That means higher prices at online sportsbooks and you must be aware of this fact when you look at baseball lines.

Not only are the Yankees, Red Sox, and Cubs popular teams, they are almost always overpriced on the baseball odds board because of their extreme popularity. It is incredible to observe how many people have no concept of baseball lines value and are completely oblivious to what they are doing from a fundamental betting perspective when they bet on these teams.  The baseball lines makers are taking full advantage of this knowledge as they know that there are enough ignorant players that will pay any price to bet on these teams.

You can go back in history and see examples of overpriced baseball lines. Look what happened back in 2005 with the Yankees.  They went 97-70 and lost money for their followers versus the baseball odds.  Yes, they lost money for those that wagered on them versus the baseball lines.  The same thing happens all the time with marquee teams.  You must avoid these losing overlays and look at other baseball lines. When you follow the public and bet marquee teams you do so at your own risk.
