Do you remember how everyone loved the Seattle Mariners vs. the baseball lines before the Major League Baseball season began?. It seems like a lifetime ago that the Mariners were considered a threat in American League West baseball odds. Seattle is coming off the worst month of July in their history and they are on pace to lose more than 100 games this season.
Baseball lines list the Mariners as underdogs on almost a daily basis. The team went 0-7 on their recent road trip. It was only the 11th time in team history they didn’t win at least one game on a road trip of five or more games. Just how pathetic were the Mariners on the trip? They scored 14 runs in the seven games. They went into Monday’s action having not scored in 21 straight innings. The Mariners were outscored in the road trip 41-14.
The Mariner organization looks to be in disarray on and off the field. They have used a different lineup for 27 games in a row. That is hard to do. In their 106 games they had used 90 different lineups. The pitching for Seattle has been decent but the hitting has been awful. Since the starting pitchers are not getting any runs they are starting to falter as well. Seattle made one deal before the trading deadline and it was not a good one. They traded away their best pitcher, Cliff Lee to Texas and the main player they got in return, first baseman Justin Smoak was just sent to the minors.
It is possible that this year’s Seattle team will be the worst one in their history. That seemed unthinkable before the season began. The Mariners worst season was back in 1978 as they went 56-104. If Seattle doesn’t start playing better than they have of late they could actually challenge that record of futility vs. the baseball odds. It is also possible that there will be some changes in the Mariners front office. The general manager is Jack Zduriencik and his job may not even be safe. Manager Don Wakamatsu could also be in danger after the disaster that the Mariners have become this season. If you want to make a wager on the Mariners you really might want to reconsider that choice.
