Belmont betting recent history has shown that upsets can happen. In 2007 it was Curlin getting upset in Belmont wagering by the filly Rags to Riches. The previous years also saw some unusual results in terms of Belmont Stakes odds
Belmont wagering is usually more about favorites than underdogs but in recent Belmont betting that has not been the case. We mentioned the 2007 upset win in Belmont Stakes odds by Rags to Riches. The 2006 winner was Jazil and that was another upset in Belmont betting. In 2005 a favorite came though as Afleet Alex took the title. The 2004 Belmont wagering win by Birdstone was a big shock as Smarty Jones was going for a Triple Crown but was denied. The 2003 Belmont wagering winner was Empire Maker. He upset Funny Cide but looking back it was not a huge upset as Empire Maker had beaten Funny Cide before the Belmont and beat him again in Belmont betting.
The 2002 winner in Belmont Stakes odds was Sarava at huge Belmont wagering odds of 70-1. This was one time in Belmont betting that everyone was shocked as Sarava came from nowhere to win this race. The 2001 winner was heavily favored Point Given. This horse probably should have won the Triple Crown but did not have a good trip in the Derby. Point Given is thought of as a dominating Belmont wagering winner.
The 2000 Belmont wagering winner was Commendable while the 1999 winner was Lemon Drop Kid. The 1998 Belmont Stakes odds betting winner was Victory Gallop. He upset Real Quiet to deny another Triple Crown bid. Victory Gallop had finished second to Real Quiet in the Derby and the Preakness so it was not a huge shock when he won in Belmont Stakes odds betting.
Just because underdogs have won a lot in recent Belmont history doesn’t mean that will continue. In the early 1900’s the Belmont had a stretch where not one horse won the Belmont at double-digit odds. That streak was 32 years and 19 of those times the race was won by the favorite.
