It was not a huge surprise at the sportsbook website as Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees finally reached a deal.
The negotiations between Jeter and the Yankees have been in the news recently and things got a bit messy but in the end, Jeter is staying a Yankee. New York is the 4-1 favorite to win the World Series at the online sportsbook.
$51 Million Dollar Deal
The Yankees came to a deal with Jeter that is worth a reported $51 million over three years. Jeter and his agent Casey Close met face to face with Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, President Randy Levine and general manager Brian Cashman and a deal was finally hammered out. The deal is reported to be guaranteed for three years at $51 million. There is an $8 million dollar player option for a fourth year. The option year could be worth as much as $17 million if incentives a reached.
Jeter’s Numbers
This past season was not a very good one for Jeter. He hit just .270 with 10 home runs and 67 RBIs. It was the worst season he has had since becoming an everyday player. Jeter is still paid like a top player but there are serious questions as to whether his numbers will go back up. There were no other teams even remotely in the ballpark offering Jeter anywhere near what the Yankees were but New York still gave their captain a ton of money. Jeter is still the highest paid middle infielder in all of baseball even though his production does not warrant that type of money.
More Moves to Come
The Yankees now know how much money they have with the Jeter deal done. New York is expected to put out some serious money in attempts to get Cliff Lee and Carl Crawford. The Yankees had a good season last year but it was not great against the odds at the online sportsbook. In New York, nothing less than a World Series is expected. New York has to shore up their starting rotation and they also need to address some lineup concerns as well.
