Sportsbook Preview of PGA Championship

Sportsbook operators have seen the interest in golf betting increase almost exponentially since the entry of online sports book betting into main stream sports betting.

During the past century golf betting was about as appealing as water boarding but online sportsbook sites have changed that and now golf odds are one of the most sought after betting lines in sports.  Major events are of particular interest to most sports fans and the upcoming PGA Championship could be the most popular edition of the late summer classic in the history of sportsbook betting.

Sportsbook popularity has grown every year as fans adapt to the new technology and more and more betting options become available.  While the PGA Championship is often thought of as the forgotten Major in the world of golf sports book odds, it is fine a golf betting event as you will find.

This year the PGA championship will be held at the Hazeltine National Golf Club, a stunning jewel in the great Midwest that is no stranger to hosting Major sports book events.  The course has been around since 1916 and has been home many sports book memories.  Foremost on this list is the 2002 PGA Championship that the course hosted –a sportsbook event that catapulted Rich Beem to golfing celebrity.

When the world’s best golfers descend upon the Robert Trent Jones course in mid-August we can expect some exquisite golfing and some intriguing sports book odds.  The course is laid out a staggering 7,685 yards which should make things interesting for the sportsbook competitors.  The driver will defiantly be an important piece of equipment at this Major and the length alone will dismiss the hopes of a handful of short-iron specialists who are weak off the tee.

It also means that there could be plenty of scores in red for long driving and accurate players in the sportsbook competition.  Tiger Woods will of course be the favorite in the sportsbook odds.  But he’s hardly a lock considering his poor showing at this year’s previous sportsbook Majors and the erratic results he’s had off the tee this sportsbook season.

As with any Major golf event the field will be loaded with the best golfers in the world.  The layout of the course is typically American and the winner is likely to come from North America.  With wide rolling fairways a ‘grip it and rip it’ mentality will permeate the sportsbook field, something a bit foreign to many European golfers.  Scores should be very low as well and if the weather cooperates we could see the record scores of -18 under surpassed in the 2009 edition.
