Sportsbook Operations and Opinions at SBG Global

Sportsbook opponents have had their way in the US for many decades. But with the advent of the Internet technologies they now have a very different battle on their hands.

And since there is no legal way to interfere with sportsbook online operations there options are very limited. But even without the sportsbook online industry there are many other forms of sports betting that exist that seems to be at odds with the heavy opposition to sportsbook activity on the Internet.

Sportsbook activity, despite what federal law may mandate is not prohibited in the US.  That the sportsbook online industry has been singled out as such a major target from the opposition base seems at best unfair and more likely hypocritical. For almost every year over the past decade and a half the issues of sportsbook betting on the Internet has come up in the legislative context. Yet for all the energy that has been expended on arguing over the merits and lack thereof of online sportsbooks, the argument seems to miss the point.

Why try and prohibit Internet access to sportsbook online sites when there are already so many sportsbook betting and gambling opportunities already existing on US soil. Las Vegas for example is the world Mecca of sportsbook activity. If a person wants to bet on sports in Las Vegas it’s the easiest thing in the world. So why would the Congress waste so much time and energy attacking the sportsbook activity on the Internet when sports betting on US soil via US sportsbook operators goes on every day of the year.

But the sportsbook aspect is just a small part of it. The majority of people that wager online do so using poker sites or other forms of non-sport gambling.  This is an issue that most opponents to sportsbooks also strongly oppose. But almost everyone in the US has access to a casino that is within a half-hour drive from their residence, perhaps even less for many people.

Indian Casinos, slots in gas stations, race tracks, riverboat gambling, just to name a few are forms of gambling that are supposedly illegal in this country but are as common as McDonalds in most of the land. To continually attack the sportsbook online industry as a great ‘moral’ danger or on any other ground is a great waste of time and energy is the intent is to prevent people from gambling. And it makes little sense to try and ban sportsbook activity on the Internet when there are so many other more accessible forms of betting in the US.
