Sportsbook Odds Usually Don’t Predict the Super Bowl Winner

Sportsbook Odds Usually Don’t Predict the Super Bowl Winner. How often does the preseason favorite in Super Bowl odds at the sportsbook actually go on to win the big game? The answer is not very often. In recent history teams that were not thought of seriously as contenders actually won the Super Bowl.  Which teams in 2010 could come from nowhere to surprise everyone at the Internet sportsbook?

Sportsbook odds favor the Indianapolis Colts to win the Super Bowl this season and that is bad news if you are a Colts fan.  Rarely do preseason favorites win the Super Bowl.  The defending Super Bowl champions, the New Orleans Saints are the second choice in Super Bowl odds and they have their work cut out for them.  In the past 12 seasons, only the New England Patriots have won back-to-back titles.

If you are considering Super Bowl future odds you may want to know that the last three Super Bowl champs won 8, 10 and 8 games the previous season.  Those three teams were the New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints.  What teams enter this season having won between 8 and 10 games last season? There are 13 teams that fit into that category.

The New England Patriots won 10 games last season but many people believe the Patriots have too many problems to win the Super Bowl this season.  The Cincinnati Bengals also won 10 games last year but they are not getting much respect as they are the third choice in their own division. The Arizona Cardinals won 10 games last season but they lost Kurt Warner and not many people are giving them a chance. That leaves 10 teams.  Pittsburgh won 9 games but they have numerous issues including quarterback Ben Roethlisberger so throw them out. Tennessee and San Francisco each won 8 games last year but the Titans have Vince Young at quarterback while the 49ers have Alex Smith. Throw those two teams out. Houston won nine games but they have yet to make the playoffs. Throw them out. Carolina won eight games last season and has an unproven quarterback in Matt Moore but they are not without a chance. Denver also won eight games but unless Tim Tebow instantly becomes a star they are unlikely to win the Super Bowl. That leaves four main contenders who won eight or nine games last year.

The New York Giants won eight games and could bounce back with a big 2010.  The New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens each won nine games and they are “hot” teams in Super Bowl futures while the Atlanta Falcons could be this year’s Saints.
