Sportsbook Fans Note Lightning Overhaul

Sportsbook odds in the NHL Playoffs have not included the Lightning for three straight years. The Lightning went 34-36-12 this season. They did nothing under head coach Rick Tocchet who replaced Barry Melrose in November of 2008. “On the hockey side of things, I thought it was very important to have a fresh start. Nothing negative about Rick Tocchet or Brian Lawton,” said Tampa Bay owner Jeff Vinik.

The Lightning really played poorly down the stretch vs. sportsbook odds after getting into playoff contention in February. Vinik believes the team has talent and can win. “I saw a lot of talent on the ice. I saw the makings of a great team. I saw an organization that can achieve a lot of great things in the years ahead,” Vinik said. “The moves I’ve done today hopefully are to help us move as quickly as possible in that direction.”

Some of the Tampa players were not surprised. “Where we’ve finished the last two or three years is depressing,” forward Martin St. Louis said, “Stability is always nice. I think it gives you a chance to grow. But obviously the results we’ve had the last three years, there’s changes going to be made.” It’s part of the business. You’re judged on results. I feel bad for Toc. I wish we could have gotten better results for him.”

Tampa Bay is paying Vincent Lecavalier a lot of money but he may not return next sportsbook NHL season.  “We were in a great position to make it, and we didn’t,” Lecavalier said. “Nothing you can do now. It’s over. You start fresh next year. That’s what we’ll do.” Lecavalier said.

It was not all bad news this season for Tampa Bay. Their top pick in 2008, Steven Stamkos scored 51 goals this season to tie Sidney Crosby for the goal scoring lead in the NHL. “It’s a pretty special time for me individually. Obviously, you’d much rather be in the playoffs. But it’s nice to get the 50th goal, and it’s icing on the cake to win the Richard,” the Stamkos said, “To be tied with Crosby is pretty special. I never would have dreamt this day would come so early in my career. At the same time, all the hard work in paying off.”
