Browns Cut Anderson, Sign Wallace

Sportsbook information had the Cleveland Browns changing their quarterbacks on Tuesday as they released former starter Derek Anderson. Just a day ago the team acquired Seneca Wallace from Seattle so it now looks like the Browns will win or lose vs. the offshore sportsbook odds with Brady Quinn at quarterback.

Sportsbook had Anderson as a former Pro Bowler but in recent seasons he had simply been a disaster. Quinn has not been much better but he is seen to have more potential. The Browns would have had to pay Anderson a $2 million roster bonus this month and over $7 million in 2010 and that simply was not going to happen. “I want to thank Derek for everything that he gave to the Cleveland Browns organization over the last five years,” Browns coach Eric Mangini said, “He did everything we asked of him and it was a pleasure to coach such a competitive person. I want to wish him all the best in the future.” Anderson was excellent in 2007 as he threw for 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns. He got a three-year extension but was simply horrible after that 2007 offshore sportsbook season and the Browns went downhill fast.

Cleveland is led now by Mike Holmgren so it makes sense that he would want one of his former players. Getting Seneca Wallace gives the Browns a proven backup quarterback. “This will give Seneca a chance for a fresh start,” Seattle general manager John Schneider said. “The Browns front office’s familiarity with his abilities will give him an opportunity to compete for playing time. We wish him nothing but the best.” Wallace has really not done much in his NFL career but Holmgren believes he can still be a quality backup. Wallace started eight games in 2008 and threw for 1,532 yards and 11 touchdowns. He played twice in relief of Matt Hasselbeck last season. Wallace has played in 46 career games with the Seahawks. He has started 14 games at quarterback. He has 25 career touchdowns with a passer rating of 83.2.

Some people still believe the Browns need to take a quarterback in the NFL Draft or make another deal. Quinn has not proven to be a quality NFL starter although he has not had a great deal of time. Cleveland is considered a huge longshot at the sportsbook to win next year’s Super Bowl.
