Spurrier Getting Involved, Sports Betting Odds Unchanged

Sports betting odds on South Carolina in recent seasons have been somewhat disappointing even with head coach Steve Spurrier at the helm. The Gamecocks have become known more for their defense than for their offense under Spurrier. That could change next sports betting online college football season though as Spurrier is going to call the plays.

Sports betting numbers indicated that South Carolina went 7-6 both straight up and against the spread last season.  Part of the problem for the Gamecocks was an offense that ranked 102nd in the country in points scored.  That just doesn’t sound like a Steve Spurrier team.  Spurrier has said that things are going to change in 2010 with the play calling. “I called most all of them last year, but I’m going to call them all this year,” Spurrier said to ESPN, “Sometimes, you think, ‘Well, it’s probably best to delegate a little bit more, this, that and the other.’ “But, no, I told the guys the other day that I’m going to go back to doing it the way I did it at Florida. I’m going to call the plays, or else they’re going to all come through me.”

Spurrier is known as a great offensive head coach but he has not been calling all of the plays in recent years.  Spurrier has said that first-year offensive line coach and running game coordinator Shawn Elliott would be involved in the offense. “It’s pretty good stuff, and we’re trying to expand it this spring,” Spurrier said. “The offensive line doesn’t have to be as great as Alabama’s or Florida’s, maybe, to get some running lanes in there.” Sports betting online stats indicated that Florida was last in the SEC in rushing last season at only 121.2 yards per game.

They were terrible protecting the quarterback as they allowed 37 sacks.  Spurrier is sick of the offense making mistakes and that includes quarterback Stephen Garcia. “I’m going to yell and scream and be a jerk,” said Spurrier, “I hope one or two players say, ‘That coach Spurrier is yelling at us all the time.’ Nobody has said that lately. I’m going to try and be a little bit more of a jerk to some guys, because we’ve put up with too much soft play, put up with pitiful effort by some guys and put up with just not good team play.”

This will be Spurrier’s sixth season at South Carolina.  His teams have only won more than seven games once.  They have lost five or more games each season.  South Carolina remains a longshot in sports betting to win the national title at 100-1.
