Online Sports Betting Odds: World Cup Host South Africa has Long

Online Sports Betting Odds: World Cup Host South Africa has Long.  The 2010 World Cup will be held in South Africa and that means the country gets an automatic bid but in online sports betting odds, South Africa has very little chance to win. Offshore sports betting odds list South Africa as a 90-1 longshot to win the World Cup that begins on June 11th.

Online sports betting odds don’t list South Africa with the longest odds. There are actually 10 teams that have longer odds and three other teams with odds equal to theirs.  South Africa has never made it to the second round of a World Cup and the odds are they won’t make it this time either.  South Africa is in a group with France, Mexico and Uruguay.

While South Africa has the longest odds of any of those teams in Group A, the good news is that the group is not that strong.  France is solid but Mexico is a traditional underachieving team and Uruguay is beatable in offshore sports betting odds.  South Africa’s head coach is trying to play the underdog angle. “We are the lowest of the teams at the World Cup. That’s OK, because our opponents might think we are not going to be difficult for them,” Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said, “But well prepared, in our home ground, with 90,000 supporters, we are going to give them a good fight.” South African opens up the World Cup as they face Mexico on June 11th.

Parreira is a good coach and he should have his team well prepared.  The problem for South Africa is they have very little experience and not a lot of proven talent.  South Africa has Aaron Mokoena, Steven Pienaar and striker Benni McCarthy. Itumeleng Khune of the Kaizer Chiefs is a good goalkeeper and he will need to be great in the World Cup if South Africa is to have success in online sports betting odds.  Pienaar played well for Everton this season and he is capable of scoring some goals. McCarthy is South Africa’s leading scorer with 35 goals in 83 games but whether he has anything left at age 32 is in question. “I believe Benni is a big asset for us because of his quality and experience, and if he can’t be here with us it’s a big blow,” Parreira said. “We need him for his experience.”
