Contrarian to Sports Betting

Sportsbetting will sometimes have teams that look like certain locks against the spread. Once you finally believe in or against a team, it is likely that the gambling masses are also seeing the same thing. This means that the majority of online sportsbetting gamblers have the same eye-sight. For example, if there is a team that has emerged as a football power and the masses now are on board and believing in them, the price of that team is going to go up in online sports betting. If this team was once a three point favorite against their opponent, now that all the sportsbetting public is on board they may instead be a seven point favorite against that same team. That is how a team loses value on the sports betting odds board.

A great example of how a team gets priced out of the market would be the 2005 New England Patriots, who were coming off back-to-back Super Bowl titles, (and three out of the previous four). Beyond that, the Patriots had covered the sports betting spread well in excess of sixty-percent of the time in those prior four seasons. By the time the 2005 season arrived, most sports betting gamblers totally believed in the New England Patriots. They were known as a cash cow and money in the bank. And that was the problem. There was too much belief in New England, and they struggled in the red for the first two-thirds of the season, before they finally got some money back against the sports betting spread. The Indianapolis Colts of 2005 were the opposite extreme. It took until November for the public to finally see them as a sports betting value and by that time it was too late.

Do you see what is happening here?  If everyone starts to see something then it is time for contrarian sportsbetting gamblers to go the other way.  And no, it is not easy to do.  It is tough to back that popular team in football, basketball or baseball sportsbetting.  When everyone is on the other side it takes real guts to take a stand, but that is what usually works in online sportsbetting.
