Sports betting on Auburn could get an uptick while the Internet sports betting odds on UTEP could go down.The Tigers hired UTEP’s Tony Barbee as their head basketball coach on Wednesday. Barbee took UTEP to the NCAA Tournament his season and he will be looking to do the same at Auburn.
Sports betting results this past season were very successful on UTEP and pretty poor on Auburn. Those results could be reversed next season. Barbee will be getting $1.5 million for the next six years at Auburn. “We are thrilled to welcome Tony Barbee into their Family,” athletic director Jay Jacobs said, “Coach Barbee has a vision of competing for championships at Auburn, and the passion to get us there. He is a phenomenal coach, an outstanding recruiter and a fierce competitor.”
Auburn is paying a lot to Barbee and they are expecting some serious improvement. The Tigers paid former head coach Jeff Lebo $785,000 before firing him. The Tigers did not make the NCAA Tournament even once under Lebo so it was no surprise to see him let go. Barbee could have a lot more success and Auburn could become competitive in sports betting. “I’m very excited about the opportunity to join the Auburn Family and proud to be the next head coach at Auburn,” Barbee said, “We have challenges in front of us, but we also have great opportunities with everything Auburn has to offer — a great university, outstanding community, tremendous fan support, and a terrific new arena and practice facility. The time is now to take their basketball to new heights.”
Just how good was UTEP under Barbee this past season? They went 15-1 in Conference USA and Barbee was named the conference coach of the year. The Miners improved from 14 wins to 19 wins to 23 wins to 26 wins under Barbee. UTEP lost the Conference USA title game to Houston but they still made the NCAA Tournament. They were beaten in the first round by Butler in Internet sports betting.
Auburn has not been on the board in Internet sports betting in the NCAA Tournament since 2003. They could have a decent shot to turn that around under Barbee. He replaced Lebo who is now the head coach at East Carolina. He should have a lot more success than Lebo had. Barbee is known as an excellent recruiter and Auburn really needs to upgrade their talent.
