Wide Open Field for 2019 Preakness Stakes Saturday

At the onset of the entries with the Preakness Stakes Odds are two notable absences.  Maximum Security, who was initially believed to have won the Kentucky Derby, will not take part in the Preakness.  But the horse was later disqualified and his owner decided that with no chance at a Triple Crown the short two-week break to the Preakness was not worth the risk.  Country House, the “official” winner of the Kentucky Derby, will also be absent.  Accordingly, the Derby winner’s trainer claimed that Country House has a virus.  For this reason, the Preakness is wide open for Saturday.

2019 Preakness Stakes

Now Saturday marks the 144th running of the Preakness Stakes.  The Preakness is known for being the second middle race of the United States Triple Crown racing season.  In recent years this race has been known for “new shooters.”  These are horses that skipped the Kentucky Derby and are therefore fresher and more rested for the Preakness Stakes Odds.  The purse for the Preakness is $1.5 million and coverage on NBC will run from 5 p.m. to 7: 15 p.m. ET.  Concurrently the Preakness Stakes is the shortest of all Triple Crown races at a mile and 3/16 in length.

Baffert Enters Only One Horse

A clear difference between the Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby is immediately apparent in the lineup of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.  In the Kentucky Derby Baffert entered a total of three top contenders.  For the Preakness Stakes Baffert has only one entry.  Improbable will take to the starting gate as an Online wagering co-favorite with War of Will.  Last time out for Improbable was a fourth-place finish at the Kentucky Derby.  Improbable is best known for his win in the Grade One Los Alamitos Futurity.  Additionally, he finished second at the Rebel Stakes and the Arkansas Derby.

War of Will

Balanced against the Baffert entry is co-favorite War of Will.  In the Kentucky Derby War of Will finished seventh.  Of great concern was a ninth-place finish at the Louisiana Derby.  But before that slump War of Will won the Risen Star and Lecomte.

Win Win Win

Late results have been mixed for Win Win Win.  The Kentucky Derby was not impressive at all for this horse as he finished in ninth place.  Prior to that was a second-place finish at the Blue Grass Stakes.  He also finished a respectable third in the Tampa Bay Derby.

Warriors Charge

Warriors Charge skipped the Kentucky Derby as one of the top “new shooters” in this field.  This will be the first graded stakes race in the career of Warriors Charge.  Overall, he has won back to back allowance races.

Matchup to Watch

On this occasion we have a depleted field to judge with the Preakness Stakes Odds.

This is where the training excellence of Baffert should take over.
