Tips for 2010 Preakness Betting

2010 Preakness betting gives you a lot of options to consider for the race on Saturday, May 15th. As you look at the Preakness Stakes odds there are some tips that can help you identify the winner and make more money.

2010 Preakness betting is going to start with the favorite. Yes, it is simple enough to take the favorite in horse racing but over the long haul it doesn’t work.  In the Preakness though, the favorite wins almost half the time. That is a number you just can’t ignore.  Even last year the favorite won when Rachel Alexandra beat Kentucky Derby winner, Mine That Bird.  When you start to handicap the Preakness you have to start with the favorite. How often has the favorite won recently?  The favorite has cashed in seven of the last nine runnings of the Preakness.  If you are going to buck that trend then you better have a very good reason for doing so.

Handicapping the Preakness can also include factors like the jockey, trainer, class, pace and speed.  Pace is not as important as it was in the Derby because the race is shorter and the field is smaller.  Speed matters but it not as important as you might think.  The horse that can rate just off the pace can win in 2010 Preakness betting. Closers usually don’t win the Preakness because they don’t have as much ground to make up.

The trainer and jockey factor are worth looking at but again, they are not critical.  Usually if a horse is favored he has a solid connection.  Preakness winners are rarely a surprise. There will be some longshots in the Preakness but they are just in it for the money. They almost never win this race. This is not the Kentucky Derby where longshots have a chance to win.

If you don’t want to do much handicapping then you could consider getting a tip sheet either at your local track or on the Internet.  Tip sheets include the handicapper’s selections for the race.  They are not going to be a surprise in Preakness Stakes odds so don’t get too excited when they all pick the favorite. The Daily Racing Form will have selections as well and so will handicappers from all over the world. They are no better or worse than you are when it comes to picking the winner.
