Recent Preakness Stakes Odds Winners at SBG Global

Preakness Stakes odds winners recently have been heavily favored including last year’s winner, Big Brown. The Kentucky Derby winner has taken four of the past seven Preakness betting races. Let’s look at the recent winners in the Preakness and their odds.

Preakness Stakes odds history tells us that Big Brown won in 2008, Curlin won in 2007, Berandini in 2006 while Afleet Alex was the victor in Preakness Stakes odds in 2005. Smarty Jones was the popular choice in Preakness  odds in 2004 while Funny Cide won in 2003. War Emblem won the Preakness in 2002. Point Given was the winner in 2001 while Red Bullet won in 2000.

Preakness Stakes odds winners in the 1990’s were Summer Squall in 1990, Hansel in 1991, Pine Bluff in 1992, Prairie Bayou in 1993, Tabasco Cat in 1994, Timber Country in 1995, Louis Quatorze in 1996, Silver Charm in 197, Real Quiet in 1998 and Charismatic in 1999.

The Preakness Stakes odds on Big Brown were a huge 1-5 but the result was never in doubt in 2008. The Preakness Stakes odds on Curlin in 2007 had him at 7-2 behind Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense who went off as the Preakness betting favorite.

2006 was a difficult year for Preakness betting. Barbaro was sent off as the 1-2 favorite and if not for suffering an injury probably would have won. Instead it was 14-1 longshot Bernardini winning in Preakness odds. Afleet Alex was 3-1 in Preakness Stakes odds in 2005. Smarty Jones was an odds-on favorite when he won in 2004 while Funny Cide was about a 2-1 favorite in 2003. War Emblem was about 3-1 in 2002 while Point Given was 2-1 in 2001. Red Bullet was 6-1 in 2000.

Favorites have been the way to go for the most part in Preakness odds. Looking back at the last decade we see a lot of favorites coming through in Preakness Stakes odds. The number would be even higher if not for a very talented Curlin who upset Street Sense and if Barbaro had not gotten hurt in 2006.

If you are going to take a shot against the favorite in the Preakness you do so with a risk since the favorite wins almost half the time in Preakness betting. That doesn’t mean you can’t take a shot, but you probably should put the favorite into some of your tickets.
