Animal Kingdom
Not many people expected Animal Kingdom to win the Kentucky Derby as the horse went off with odds of about 20-1.  Animal Kingdom should not be dismissed as a longshot that didn’t have a chance though.  In the past two years you could throw Mine That Bird and Super Saver into that category but not with Animal Kingdom.  Mine That Bird and Super Saver have never won another race since winning the Derby but that should not be the case with Animal Kingdom. Trainer Graham Motion has called the horse brilliant and said that he has everything needed to win.

Large Field?
It is possible that there will be a good sized field for the Preakness.  Third place finisher Mucho Macho Man and beaten favorite Dialed In will make the trip to Pimlico.  Second place Derby horse Nehro will not be entered. It is possible that Shackleford who was fourth in the Derby and Santiva who was sixth might make the trip along with Soldat and Derby Kitten who were well beaten.  Newcomers for the Preakness are expected to include Astrology, Dance City, Concealed Identity, Flashpoint, Prime Cut, King Congie, Norman Asbjornson and Sway Away. It is also possible that Mr. Commons may be entered. Horses that didn’t race in the Derby have traditionally done poor in the Preakness so that is something to keep in mind as you make a Preakness Stakes bet.

Triple Crown Odds
Animal Kingdom is still an underdog to win the Triple Crown at odds of about 5 or 6-1 but he will be the favorite in the Preakness.  He will likely go off anywhere from 2-1 to 3-1 in Preakness Stakes betting.  Last year it was Super Saver who was trying to stay alive for the Triple Crown but the horse finished a very disappointing eighth even though he went off as the post time favorite. Last year it was Lookin at Lucky who won the Preakness going off at odds of about 3-1.
