Preakness Stakes Betting & the Trifecta

Preakness Stakes betting gives you many different wagering choices including the trifecta. Is the trifecta a good bet and can it make you money vs. the Preakness Stakes odds?  Preakness Stakes betting usually includes 8-12 horses.  The field is a lot smaller than the 20 that were in the Kentucky Derby.  A smaller field means hitting the trifecta is easier although it may not pay as much.  Getting the contenders down to a manageable level is important though.

When betting a trifecta the first step is to find the horse you think can win. That could be the Kentucky Derby winner or it could be another horse. Normally you are going to be looking at a horse that ran in the Derby for your key horse in a Preakness trifecta.  Rarely does a horse win the Preakness without running in the Derby although exceptions do happen as Rachel Alexandra proved last year.  After finding the key horse for the trifecta the next step is to put a few horses together with that horse.  It could be that you key one horse with four others in a trifecta ticket.

Another option in Preakness States betting for your trifecta is to box horses.  This is where you choose a number of horses and box them together on a single ticket.  For example, let’s say you have that key horse and another four horses you like.  Instead of keying that horse with the other four, you box all five horses in your trifecta.  Now the order of the horses doesn’t matter as long as three of your five finish first, second and third.  In fact, if the favorite finishes out of the money and three of your other horses make it in the trifecta, you can win some good money.

The way that many people bet the trifecta in Preakness odds is to box horses.  This avoids the problem of having to pick a horse to win the race.  Instead you just pick your favorite four or five horses and put them into a ticket.  You can also choose to box only three horses if you are very confident.  It is a cheaper way to play a trifecta ticket although it is tough to have each of your horses finish in the top three.

The trifecta is a great bet to consider for this year’s Preakness as you can hit a nice ticket and win some good money.
