Pleasant Prince 2010 Preakness Betting

One of the longshots in 2010 Preakness betting on Saturday will be Pleasant Prince. Pleasant Prince was headed to the Kentucky Derby but he did not have enough earnings to make the field.  He will be listed at double-digit Preakness Stakes odds on Saturday.

2010 Preakness betting will have a couple of horses at single-digit odds and a lot of longshots.  Super Saver and Lookin at Lucky are probably going to get most of the attention from the betting public.  Longshots like Pleasant Prince are likely to be ignored.

Pleasant Prince has a weak pedigree as his sire Indy King was unraced.  His dam Archduchess was unraced and Pleasant Prince is her first foal to race. Pleasant Prince’s second dam is My Marchesa who was a stakes winner and is a half sister to Black Cash. At least Pleasant Prince is in the family of Sauce Boat, Mark One, and Raja Baba.
Pleasant Prince had a chance to win the Florida Derby but was beaten by Ice Box.  That horse came back to finish second in the Kentucky Derby behind Super Saver.

Pleasant Prince was out of the money in the Bluegrass Stakes and then he finished third in the Derby Trial. His owner Ken Ramsey really wanted to make the Derby. “The Derby is a special race. I could win three Dubai World Cups and that might mean more internationally, but not to me. I’m getting kind of long in the tooth and I’ve got Derby fever something bad.” The final work for Pleasant Prince was five furlongs in: 59 seconds at Keeneland. He will be ridden in the Preakness by jockey Julien Leparoux.

It is hard to know what to make of Pleasant Prince in 2010 Preakness Stakes betting. His owners seem intent on racing this horse regardless of whether or not he is ready.  His first stakes race was in the Fountain of Youth where he finished fourth.  He then finished second in the Florida Derby before poor efforts in his last two races. He does have a Best Beyer Speed figure of 99 in his career so if he decides to fire he could be a late factor.

In 2002, 2003 and 2004 the Derby winner went on to win in Preakness Stakes odds but since 2004 only Big Brown has gone to Belmont with a chance to win the Triple Crown.  Barbaro may have been the one to do it in 2006 but he broke down and in 2007 it was Curlin defeating Street Sense.  Last year it was Rachel Alexandra beating Mine That Bird.
