Injuries Cut the 2010 Preakness Odds Field to 12

The full field that was expected for 2010 Preakness odds is not going to happen as injuries have cut the field to 12 horses. Hurricane Ike was the latest horse to be withdrawn from Preakness Stakes betting consideration.

2010 Preakness odds would not have favored Hurricane Ike as Super Saver is favored but Hurricane Ike would have been a contender. The horse won the Derby Trial and beat Aikenite who is in the Preakness field.  “My horse isn’t so fine,” trainer John Sadler said, “It’s something that came up this morning. I got a call telling me that he was off behind.”

The field for 2010 Preakness odds will include five horses that were in the Kentucky Derby including the winner, Super Saver.  Also in the Preakness Stakes betting field are Paddy O’Prado who finished third, Lookin at Lucky who was sixth, Dublin who finished seventh and Jackson Bend who was 12th. Ice Box who was second in the Derby will not run in the Preakness. It was looking like a full field of 14 for the Preakness earlier this week but with some late defections the field is now only expected to be 12.

Half of the field in the Preakness on Saturday will be trained by just three trainers.  Todd Pletcher, D. Wayne Lukas and Dale Romans have two horses each in the field.  It is nothing new for Pletcher or Lukas to have multiple horses in a big race but Romans will be starting his first two horses in the Preakness.  He is sending Paddy O’Prado and First Dude.  Pletcher has Derby winner Super Saver and Aikenite while Lukas has Dublin and Northern Giant.

The other six horses expected in Preakness Stakes betting on Saturday are Caracortado who is trained by Mike Machowsky, Pleasant Prince trained by Wesley Ward, Schoolyard Dreams trained by Derek Ryan, Jackson Bend trained by Nick Zito, Yawanna Twist who is trained by Richard Dutrow Jr. and Bob Baffert’s Lookin at Lucky.

The jockeys for the Preakness are Calvin Borel aboard Super Saver, Javier Castellano on Aikenite, Garrett Gomez aboard Dublin, Terry Thompson on Northern Giant, Kent Desormeaux on Paddy O’Prado, Ramon Dominguez aboard First Dude, Paul Atkinson on Caracortado, Julien Leparoux on Pleasant Prince, Eibar Coa on Schoolyard Dreams, Mike Smith on Jackson Bend, Martin Garcia on Lookin at Lucky and Edgar Prado aboard Yawanna Twist.
