Handicapping and Betting Preakness Odds at SBG Global

Preakness odds are likely to give Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird very little respect come Saturday. The Derby winner went off at 50-1 odds and won’t be the favorite in Preakness betting.  Is it a good idea to dismiss the Derby winner in Preakness odds and handicapping?

Preakness odds are likely to favor Rachel Alexandra with Mine That Bird the third or fourth choice in Preakness betting.  Normally in Preakness odds the Derby winner is favored.  Oftentimes that horse will win the Preakness.  In fact, the Derby winner has won 7 of the last 12 in Preakness betting.  The problem is that every time that horse then lost in the Belmont.  This year it is unlikely the Derby winner even makes it to the Belmont.

Preakness odds are going to have a lot of new horses in this year’s field, including the filly Rachel Alexandra.  Normally new horses in the Preakness do not do well as sports betting history tells us. They simply don’t win in Preakness betting very often.  Normally about half of the Preakness field will have run in the Derby while the other half of the Preakness field will be newcomers.  It would seem that the fresher horses have the advantage in Preakness odds but historically that has not been the case.  The Derby horses almost always win in the Preakness.

Looking at Preakness history we see that only twice in the last 25 years has a horse won the Preakness having not run in the Derby.  That type of sports betting stat does not bode well for Rachel Alexandra, Hull or Big Drama as they are some of the newcomers in Preakness odds this year. But we have seen recently that historical trends get broken all the time and it could happen again this year, especially with a superstar horse like Rachel Alexandra.

When you handicap Preakness odds at the sportsbook don’t forget about some of the Derby horses that had off days.  The track was a mess and traffic was a problem.  Friesan Fire was the Derby favorite and could easily bounce back in Preakness betting.  Second and third place Derby horses, Pioneerof The Nile and Musket Man could also do well in the Preakness.
