Chances of a Filly in 2010 Preakness Betting

Could there be another filly that wins in 2010 Preakness betting? Last year it was Rachel Alexandra winning in Preakness Stakes odds as the 9-5 favorite.  She was only the fifth filly to ever win the Preakness. 2010 Preakness betting could include another filly if Todd Pletcher’s Devil May Care runs.  She is capable of running with the boys although she may not be in the class of Rachel Alexandra.  Last year was the exception to the rule as Rachel Alexandra did not run in the Derby but ran in the Preakness and won.  She was the first horse ever to come from the Kentucky Oaks and be entered in the Preakness.

History has shown that only five fillies have ever won in Preakness Stakes odds.  Last year it was Rachel Alexandra winning the Preakness and then you have to go all the way back to Nellie Morse in 1924.  Rhine Maiden won in 1915, Whimsical in 1906 and Flocarline in 1903.  There have been 53 fillies to start in the Preakness with 5 winning, 5 finishing second, and 8 finishing third. The year that Rhine Maiden won the Preakness it was a better filly, Regret who won the Derby.

Before last year, the last filly to enter the Preakness was Excellent Meeting in 1999. She did nothing in the race and was retired after her 4-year-old season. You then have to go back to 1988 Kentucky Derby winner, Winning Colors for the last filly in the Preakness. She finished third that year.

What about a filly in 2010 Preakness betting? The only horse with a chance would be Devil May Care. The horse is owned by Glencrest Farms and trained by Todd Pletcher. Devil May Care is out of Kelli’s Ransom, making her a half-sister to Regal Ransom She was sired by Malibu Moon who is the son of A.P. Indy.  Devil May Care’s broodmare sire is Red Ransom, who won two of his three career starts.

Devil May Care broke her maiden last year and then won the Frizette at Belmont Park before finishing 11th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. She was 5th in her first race this year in the Silverbulletday Stakes at the Fair Grounds then won the Bonnie Miss at Gulfstream Park on March 20th. She earned a career best Beyer figure of 100 in that race.
