Betting 2010 Preakness Odds

The favorite could be the way to go in 2010 Preakness odds. Historically the favorite has done quite well in Preakness Stakes betting. The Preakness has a shorter field than the Derby and the favorite wins almost half the time.

2010 Preakness odds should favor the Kentucky Derby winner.  That is the normal scenario when it comes to the Preakness although last year the filly Rachel Alexandra was favored against Derby winner Mine That Bird.  The Preakness is held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland on the second Saturday in May. This year’s race is on Saturday, May 15th.

The first ever Preakness had a total of seven horses and the winning horse won by 10 lengths which is still the record.  The Preakness is recent years has had bigger fields as more trainers take a shot at the Derby winner.  Just because the Derby horse is going for the Triple Crown does not mean he will win the Preakness.  The Kentucky Derby winner is almost always favored so the decision is what to do in the race. Since the Derby winner will be the heavy favorite in Preakness Stakes betting, the 2010 Preakness odds on other horses will look good.  The problem becomes finding a Preakness horse that can beat the horse that won the Derby.  Last year that horse was Rachel Alexandra but two years ago no one could beat Derby winner Big Brown.

In four of the last five years, the Derby winner has lost the Preakness.  Only Big Brown came through for those bettors looking for a Triple Crown. Big Brown could not deliver though in the Belmont.  Sometimes the Derby winner will be a horse that won as a longshot and won’t get respect as a horse that can win the Triple Crown so the horse is not favored in the Preakness.

Here are the Preakness winners for the past ten years with their jockey and trainer also listed.
