2010 Preakness Betting & the Triple Crown

2010 Preakness betting is the second race in the Triple Crown. This year’s race takes place on Saturday, May 15th. Preakness Stakes odds will likely favor the Kentucky Derby winner but is it likely the horse will win the Triple Crown

2010 Preakness betting would have been more interesting had the potential superstar Eskendereya not been hurt before the Kentucky Derby.  That horse was a real Triple Crown threat.  It is tough to win the Triple Crown and even great horses rarely pull off the feat. The last one that looked like he could do it was Big Brown in 2008. He won the Derby and the Preakness but failed in the Belmont. Just because a horse is talented does not mean he will win.

The Preakness Stakes is just two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and that makes it a tough race for some horses.  The Belmont Stakes is then three weeks after the Preakness Stakes. Affirmed was the last Triple Crown winner in 1978.  A total of 10 horses have won the Derby and the Preakness since that time and then failed in the Belmont.  Will that happen again this year?  It all depends upon whether or not the Derby winner stays alive by winning in 2010 Preakness betting.

In Preakness odds, the Derby winner is normally favored followed by horses that were also in the Kentucky Derby.  Just a couple of years ago when Big Brown was favored he went off a huge odds and prevailed.  Last year there was not a Triple Crown candidate since Mine That Bird lost in the Preakness after winning the Derby.

The Preakness field is normally between 8-12 horses although a full field was in the Preakness a year ago when it seemed everyone wanted a shot at the filly Rachel Alexandra. Oftentimes the field is smaller since after the Derby there are not a lot of quality horses remaining.  Usually the race will be between the Derby winner and another few horses that finished behind him in the Derby.  Rarely does the Kentucky Derby winner face a field of horses that didn’t run two weeks ago. In fact, that situation has not occurred in more than 60 years when Citation faced a field of newcomers in the Preakness. He was the biggest favorite in the history of the Preakness and he did win.
