NFL Online Wagering Update: QB Situation Goes From Bad to Worse for Pittsburgh Steelers. After drafting Ben Roethlisberger out of the University of Miami in Ohio, watching him lead the team to two Super Bowls, earned numerous Pro Bowl invites and sign the richest long-term contract in franchise history the Pittsburgh Steelers had good reason to believe that the QB position would not be source of concern in this, or any NFL online wagering season in the foreseeable future.
But then came a turbulent offseason in which Big Ben sexually harassed his way to a four-game suspension, the passing game lost its best receiver (WR Santonio Holmes traded to the Jest) and starting left tackle (Max Starks out with injury) all of a sudden the QB position became the biggest concern for the 6-time Super Bowl champ entering the 2010 online wager action.
However, the team seemed to have taken care of the problem as it re-signed capable backup Byron Leftwich who had filled in admirably in years past for this team. The team was also pleased with the development of second year QB Dennis Dixon in camp and suddenly a position of weakness seemed to become a position of strength as the team had two starter-worthy QBs on the rosters, not including All Pro Big Ben.
The Leftwich went down with an injury. And then Dixon went down with an injury and all of a sudden the team is stuck with Charlie Batch and former college QB Hines Ward, the team’s leading WR, as their top choices behind center.
Not exactly the strength the team had been expecting at this position heading into the online wagering offseason last year.
After cutting Leftwich to make room for an additional player on the roster last week the team has now brought him back on QB-thin roster. Batch is still listed as the starter but he’s little more than a Band-Aid and an assistant coach after spending the past three years as a professional clip board holder and Big Ben mentor. Leftwich could be activated for the team’s Week 3 game but his health is still in question.
The only good news for the Steelers is that the team only has two more games until Roethlisberger returns and their next opponent is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Bucs are an awful team but they are 2-0, for whatever that’s worth, and playing at home. Still with the way the Steelers defense has been playing Mike Tomlin could probably lineup behind center and the team would win.
