When Jimmie Johnson won his third straight NASCAR driving title he re-wrote the online wagering record books. When he won his 4th straight, he set himself apart from the rest of the stock racers as a once in a generation talent on the track.But now that he’s won his 5th straight NASCAR driving title Johnson has established himself, arguably, as the greatest stock car racer ever.
No one has ever even come close to achieving the type of success that Johnson is currently enjoying on the track. And sure you can make the argument that with the introduction of the Chase winning NASCAR driving titles doesn’t carry the same weight as it did before. But you could also make the case that the competition and pressure is even greater in the current age of online wagering as the rules that govern the cars and drivers is much stricter than it’s ever been.
But that’s an argument for another day. For the present fans, bettors and online wagering companies’ focus remains on Johnson’s incredible achievement. Five straight titles is something that no NASCAR fan would have ever thought possible if they hadn’t seen it with their own eyes.
To put things in perspective it would be a like an NBA team winning 15 straight online wagering titles, or a perfect 82-0 regular season record. It would be like an NFL team putting together back to back perfect seasons. Before Johnson won his 3rd straight NASAR title it had only been done once before. Last year when he notched his 4th straight win he re-wrote the record books. And now with this 5th straight title, he’s done something that most of probably won’t be able to properly comprehend for some time.
In terms of longevity he’s got a long way to go to match the career wins of someone like the great Richard Petty who raced for four decades.
But Johnson is still a young guy and plenty of great racing ahead of him. His greatness, at this point in time seems almost limitless. In clinching his 5th straight title at the Homestead Speedway he also became the first driver to win the title after trailing in the points heading into final race.
Heading into next season he’ll be the favorite once again and despite all the great competition he’ll face and the extreme difficulty in winning 6-staight titles, it would crazy to bet against this man.
