Bookmaker – Djokovic and Clijsters Win Australian Open.  The Australian Open is in the books with Novak Djokovic winning on the men’s side while Kim Clijsters won as the bookmaker favorite on the women’s side.  Djokovic was the third choice at the bookie before the Australian Open began behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer while Clijsters was one of the favorites on the women’s side.

Djokovic Routs Murray
The men’s final in the Australian Open on Sunday was not much of a match. Djokvoic completed outclassed Andy Murray, winning 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.  It was the second Australian Open title for Djokovic and yet another failure for Murray.  No men’s player from Britain has won a Grand Slam event in almost 75 years.  Murray has now lost three Grand Slam Finals and the one on Sunday was another poor showing. Djokovic had the harder route to the final as he had to get past Roger Federer in the semifinals.  In the final it was all Djokovic.  Late in the first set it was Djokovic who went on a seven game winning streak as he won the last game of the first set and the first five in the second set and the match was really over. Djokovic won 11 of his 14 service games while Murray didn’t even win half of his.  In the all-time series between the two players Djokovic leads 5-3.

Kim Clijsters Beats Li Na
On the women’s side it was Kim Clijsters winning her first Australian Open title and the fourth major of her career. She outlasted China’s Li Na 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to win against the tennis odds at the bookie.  Li Na became the first Chinese player to reach a Grand Slam singles final and she started well winning the first set against Clijsters.  The second set was back and forth and Li Na actually led 3-2 before Clijsters won two straight games to lead 4-3.  The loss in that seventh game of the second set turned the match around as Li got rattled.  She lost the second set and Clijsters really controlled the third set going up 4-1 and eventually winning 6-3. Clijsters had reached the semifinals four other times at the Australian Open but had not gotten a title. Clijsters was a popular winner in Australia and she was the favorite in bookmaker odds against Li and delivered the win for gamblers at SBG.
