Jets Mess Makes for Long NFL Futures Odds

Jets Mess Makes for Long NFL Futures Odds

At the beginning of New York Jets history, it all comes down to Super Bowl III.  In January of 1969 the Jets were 18.5-point dogs to the Baltimore Colts.  But Jets quarterback Joe Namath guaranteed victory.  He then delivered in a stunning 16-7 triumph.  It was the pinnacle of Namath’s career.  Concurrently from that point on the Jets have been a perpetual flop with the NFL futures odds.

Grounded Jets

Now in the 50 years since that epic upset the Jets have degenerated into a failed franchise.  Time and again New York has suffered from its own self-inflicted wounds.  They have never returned to the Super Bowl.  Once in a while the Jets offered a bit of hope with the NFL futures odds.  In 2009 and 2010 they made the AFC Championship Game.  Yet it proved to be a bridge to far.  Since then they have posted only one winning season.  And then things have only gotten worse.

Pouring Gasoline on the Fire

Last year the Jets posted an Offshore betting record of 4-12.  Prior to that were back to back records of 5-11 and 5-11.  Obviously, New York needed new direction.  Owing to how they have botched the leadership changes is pronounced skepticism.  First, they hired failed Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase.  Second, they fired general manager Mike Maccagnan AFTER the NFL Draft.  Maccagnan and Gase clashed immediately. It didn’t help that Maccagnan has a poor draft record.  But the timing of it all is indicative of an amateur hour clown show.  Gamblers have fled the Jets.

Current Super Bowl Futures

The Jets were far from the only offseason story in the NFL.  With training camps set to open in July teams are preparing hard.  Of course, New England is the favorite to win the Super Bowl at 6/1.  Next are the Los Angeles Rams at 8/1.  In view of their near miss in the AFC Championship Game Kansas City is a 10/1 pick.  New Orleans is 12/1 with Cleveland at 14/1.  Subsequently the Jets are all the way back at 60/1.

Cam Newton Throwing

Following shoulder surgery Carolina quarterback Cam Newton has resumed throwing.  In fact, he was tossing around a regulation size ball.  Normally quarterbacks coming off such surgery will start off with smaller balls.  In short Newton is expected to be 100% when camp opens.  Of great concern is that Carolina is coming off two losing campaigns in the last three years.  Once a Super Bowl betting favorite the Panthers are now a 50/1 long shot.

Brown Out Emerging?

On the whole Cleveland has rivaled the Jets for its organizational disfunction.  More emphatically the Browns have been a team to avoid with the NFL futures odds.  Owing to a strong finish in 2018 has that reputation changed.  Interim coach Gregg Williams took over when the team was 2-5-1.  The end result was a 5-3 finish to the season.  Rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield threw a record 27 touchdown passes.  Increasingly the Browns are gaining popularity with gamblers.  Cleveland has been bet up to 14/1 to win the Super Bowl.

Caveat Emptor

Regardless of the year a trendy pick always emerges with NFL Futures betting.  Cleveland is that team for 2019.  As a consequence, that question remains if last year was fool’s gold.  Since their return to the NFL in 1999 the Browns have one lone playoff appearance.  Offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens did much to trigger Mayfield’s success.  Thus he was named new head coach.
