New York Islanders vs. Carolina Hurricanes

On the whole what makes the NHL Playoffs the best in all of sports is the unpredictability of it.  Not that gamblers are pleased with that fact of life with the pro hockey odds.  Consider that all four division winners and the defending Stanley Cup champion have been eliminated in the first round alone.  And there has been no bigger surprise than the Carolina Hurricanes.  First the Canes scored a massive NHL betting online upset in a first round seven game series over defending Cup champion Washington.  Second, they are up 2-0 in the second round against the Islanders.

Similar Paths to Success

In the same way as Carolina the Islanders have their own NHL Betting onlineupset story.  In the first round New York pulled off a stunning four game sweep of the perennial power Pittsburgh Penguins.  Both the Canes and Isles have been successful with the same formula.  Namely defense, goaltending, and timely scoring is the recipe for their advancement in the playoffs.  Head coaches Barry Trotz of New York and Rob Brind’Amour of Carolina have coaxed full 200-foot styles of play.  While these teams are not the most talented, they play first class team hockey.

Series so Far

Games one and two of this series were tight defensive struggles.  For example, Carolina took game one in overtime 1-0 on an overtime goal by Jordan Staal.  Petr Mrazek stopped all 31 shots for the shutout victory.  Following that was a 2-1 Hurricanes win in game two.  Mrazek stopped nine out of ten shots before having to leave due to a lower body injury.  But Curtis McElhinney saved the day for the Hurricanes stopping all 17 shots that he faced.  Carolina jumped all over the Isles with two goals in the first 1:05 of the third period.

Puck Luck

To be exact the Islanders have had a strong advantage with metrics thus far.  Frustration is mounting for New York as many Islanders said they were the better team in game two.  To demonstrate the Isles hit the goal post twice in their third period comeback attempt.  Equally disastrous was a goal being waived off late in the second period.  Embracing opportunity were the Hurricanes.  Carolina was simply good and focused enough to take advantage.

Standout Goaltending

So far in the playoffs Robin Lehner of the Islanders has been a key Online wagering asset.  To show Lehner has a .952 save percentage in post season.  Mrazek’s status is not yet known for game three.  He has a .914 playoff save percentage with 40 saves on 41 shots against vs. NYI.  If needed McElhinney has stopped all 33 shots that he has faced in post season.

Matchup to Watch

At first home ice would be considered an NHL Betting online advantage.  Counter to that is the fact that the Islanders have won nine of their last 12 visits to PNC Arena.  Further, none of the last six games between these teams at Carolina went over the total.
