NHL Playoff Lines: Bruins on the Brink of Blowing 3-1 Lead to Leafs

Last Saturday night Boston seemed like a lock with the NHL playoff lines.  They were armed with a 3-1 series lead.  All they had to do was win at home to clinch the series.   And after dominating the first five games that seemed likely.  Yet Toronto rallied to win 4-3 to extend the series.  Monday on home ice the Maple Leafs evened the series with a 3-1 win.  Now the Bruins are facing the pressure of blowing the entire series.  It’s now do or die with game seven.  The loser goes home.  The winner will face Tampa Bay.

Series so Far

Boston started off gangbusters with the NHL playoff lines.  With 5-1 and 7-3 home wins to open the series they looked unbeatable.  Toronto scored a 4-2 home win in game three.  Game four was a 3-1 Boston triumph.  That set up game five at TD Garden.  Everyone expected the Bruins to clinch.  But upstart Toronto won 4-3 and chased B’s goalie Tuukka Rask from the game.  Back at TO for game six the Leafs prevailed 3-1.  Thus, game seven is set for Wednesday night.  Pressure will be enormous on the Bruins.  The Leafs are playing with house money.

Toronto

Toronto has stayed alive despite the ineffectiveness of their top player.  Center Auston Matthews was the top 2016 NHL Draft pick.  So far in the playoffs he has been limited to one goal and one assist.  A real eyesore is his minus five in the series.  During the regular season Matthews had 34 goals and 29 assists.  He also powered to a plus 25.  Left wing James van Riemsdyk has been top man for the Leafs.  So far in post season he has three goals.  Defenseman Morgan Rielly has added five assists.

Boston

Boston left wing David Pastrnak scored four goals in the first two games.  Pastrnak also has seven assists in the playoffs.  However, he has failed to light the lamp since then.  Top center Patrice Bergeron has yet to score a goal.  Bergeron scored 30 goals in regular season play.  Left wing Brad Marchand has two goals and five assists in this series.  Defenseman Torey Krug has one goal and seven assists.  However, Krug has slipped to a minus three through six games.

Team vs. Team

Boston has had the sportsbook edge vs. Toronto at home.  In the last four meetings at TD Garden the Bruins got the money three times.  None of the last three meetings at Boston in this series stayed under the total.  Goaltending has been even in this matchup.  Boston’s Tuukka Rask and Toronto’s Frederik Andersen each have a save percentage of .909.

Matchup to Watch

After five games Boston coach Bruce Cassidy was credited with getting the better of Toronto’s Mike Babcock.  But Babcock is now showing his worth with the NHL Playoff lines.  Babcock is known as the best NHL coach for a reason.  He has rallied his team.  Momentum has been seized by the Leafs.
