Coaching Change Hasn’t Mattered
The Islanders lost 10 straight with Scott Gordon as their head coach so he was fired. Interim coach Jack Capuano has not been able to turn things around and the losing streak has reached 13. The one positive from Sunday’s loss was the performance of goaltender Rick DiPietro who was making his first start in 18 days. He played very well in the loss which was a nice surprise considering he entered the game with 4.21 goals-against average and .854 save percentage. The Islanders actually played well in front of him and it was the first time in their last four games they had allowed fewer than four goals. The problem for the Islanders on Monday was their lack of offense. They good only get one goal past Atlanta goaltender Ondrej Pavelec who is playing extremely well of late. He is fifth in the league with a 2.05 goals-against average and his .936 save percentage has him fourth in the league.
Odds makers Slow to React
The Islanders have lost 13 in a row but you might be shocked to know they have been favored in two of their last four games. They were favored at home against Tampa Bay and against Florida at Sbg global.com. They were big underdogs in Atlanta in NHL betting but the Islanders have still gotten respect from the odds makers when playing at home. New York will be home on Wednesday night against Columbus.
