Edmonton Oilers Team History
The Oilers were born as a member of the World Hockey Association in 1972. Of course, they are best remembered for putting one of the greatest teams in NHL history on the ice in the 1980s. Edmonton won five Stanley Cups from 1984 through 1990. Those teams lit up the marquee with stars such as Paul Coffey, Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, and Mark Messier.
When Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988, Canada mourned and burned then-owner Peter Pocklington in effigy. But in 1990, the remaining players rallied to win the franchise’s fifth and final Stanley Cup.
Following that last Stanley Cup, the Oilers suffered the same fate as other Canadian teams in the 1990s. The Canadian dollar was weak then, and there was no salary cap. In 2015, the Oilers drafted a transformational player, Connor McDavid, first overall in the NHL Draft. McDavid was the spark that the franchise needed.
