Flames that Ignited Calgary Resurgence

Darryl Sutter is a crafty individual perpetually underestimated by the media and other NHL community members. In turn, Sutter likes to play the role of the simple-minded farmer. He will often come off like that in press conferences. Beneath the surface is an intelligent motivator and leader. And of the elite coaches in the NHL.

Goaltender Jacob Markstrom was a big reason for the Flames’ rise to division champions. Overall, Markstrom posted a .922 save percentage this season. Also, he had a 2.22 goals-against average and a 37-15-9 record.

Left-wing Johnny “Hockey” Gaudreau led the Flames with 40 goals, 75 assists, and a whopping +65. Gaudreau caught a lot of heat from Sutter early on. However, he bought into his coach’s plan. In turn, Gaudreau had a career season and became one of the NHL’s most complete players.

Left-wing Matthew Tkachuk was outstanding for the Flames. Consider that Tkachuk totaled 41 goals, 62 assists, and a +58. And then defenseman Rasmus Anderson added four goals with 46 assists and a +31.

In this situation, Calgary has more NHL betting firepower. Dallas lacks goal scoring, and their defense declined in 2021-22.
