Understanding Super Bowl Odds at SBG Global

December 1, 2010 NFL Football

Super Bowl odds normally have the favorite and the over as popular selections for gamblers.

Should you be taking the favorite and the over in Super Bowl betting?

Super Bowl odds show that of the 42 Super Bowls the favorite and dog are actually pretty close. Favorites are 21-18-3. The underdog has actually won the game outright a total of 13 times. In Super Bowl betting, the pointspread only came into play a total of eight times. If you can pick the winner, you can cover the Super Bowl odds.

Super Bowl odds history shows that the largest point spread was in Super Bowl XXIX where San Francisco was an 18 point favorite against San Diego. The 49ers won and covered the Super Bowl odds easily by a score of 49-26. Some people will say that Super Bowl III had larger Super Bowl odds. The Colts opened as a 17 point Super Bowl betting favorite against the Jets and some people say that number was as high as 20. The Jets won that game, the biggest upset in Super Bowl betting history.

Big pointspreads in Super Bowl odds are not that uncommon. The first Super Bowl had the Packers as 17 point favorites in Super Bowl odds against the Chiefs and the Packers easily covered. The Packers were 13 point favorites the next year in Super Bowl odds and covered again. Super Bowl IV was where the first major upset occurred as Minnesota was a 10 point favorite against the Chiefs but the Vikings lost outright. It was another decade before another double-digit favorite in Super Bowl odds. The Pittsburgh Steelers were 11 point favorites in Super Bowl XIV against the Rams. Six years later the Bears routed the Patriots as 11 point favorites.

The 49ers were 12 point favorites in Super Bowl XXIV and won easily as did the Cowboys as 10.5 point favorites in Super Bowl XXVII. The next four Super Bowls all had big favorites with only the 49ers covering the Super Bowl odds. The Broncos actually won outright as 12 point dogs in Super Bowl odds. The last two double-digit favorites involved New England. The Patriots won outright as 14 point dogs in Super Bowl XXXII against the Rams while last year the Giants upset the Patriots as 12 point underdogs.
