San Francisco Fails to Inspire Futures at 2025 NFL Draft

Following a 12-5 season and an overtime Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the San Francisco 49ers fell in 2024. Since the 2019 season, San Francisco has had two Super Bowl losses to Kansas City. Last year, the 49ers were an NFL futures Odds favorite to win it all. Instead, injuries wiped out San Francisco and decimated their season before it developed. Thus, the 2025 NFL Draft was a chance for the 49ers to change the narrative. Instead, an underwhelming draft has gamblers scratching their heads.

2025 49ers NFL Draft Team Review

  • Round 1: No. 11: Mykel Williams, edge, Georgia
  • Round 2: No. 43: Alfred Collins, DT, Texas
  • Round 3: No. 75: Nick Martin, LB, Oklahoma State
  • Round 3: No. 100: Upton Stout, CB, Western Kentucky
  • Round 4: No. 113: CJ West, DT, Indiana
  • Round 4: No. 138: Jordan Watkins, WR, Ole Miss
  • Round 5: No. 147: Jordan James, RB, Oregon
  • Round 5: No. 160: Marques Sigle, S, Kansas State

  • Round 7: No. 252: Junior Bergen, WR, Montana

Following a rash of personnel issues, and to no surprise, the 49ers went heavy on defense with their 2-025 NFL Draft class. To illuminate, they lost several starters in free agency. However, the 49ers might not have drafted the right players to fill those voids immediately.

Namely, Mykel Williams surprisingly went ahead of Jalon Walker. In turn, perhaps he doesn’t have the same upside as James Pearce Jr., Shemar Stewart, and Mike Green. On the other hand, San Francisco might have seen something in Williams that wasn’t easy to spot after he played through an ankle injury last season.

Still, the 2025 class was a deep class for edge rushers. Also, San Francisco missed an opportunity to add an offensive lineman in the first round after losing Aaron Banks in free agency.

As mentioned earlier, the 49ers lost tons of sports betting talent this offseason. Namely, at wide receiver, guard, defensive end, defensive tackle, linebacker, and safety. As a result, all of these positions had to be addressed. In sum, it would be best for San Francisco to draft the top player available. Caused by questions about whether Christian McCaffrey can return to full strength. Correlate that the 49ers will have a great chance of making the playoffs, given how ridiculously easy the schedule is.

At the beginning, the 49ers had a golden 2025 NFL futures opportunity to draft the best player available. Specifically, that was when Tyler Warren and Jalon Walker fell to them. Instead, they settled for Mykell Williams. While Williams should be an effective pass rusher for them, it wasn’t very pleasant to see the front office pass on top talent.

Of major concern is that the rest of San Francisco’s draft class was equally underwhelming. The 49ers made 11 draft selections, and yet none of them scored higher than a B+.

Accordingly, the one good thing about the 49ers’ draft class is that the team largely focused on the important positions. The top two choices addressed the defensive line. Meanwhile, the other early selections addressed other weak areas of the defense. However, the offensive line was neglected until late on Saturday.

To conclude, this draft class echoes the rest of San Francisco’s offseason. The 49ers disappointed gamblers, and the draft was just a continuation of that.
