San Francisco 49ers Need 2025 NFL Draft for Reset

Following three consecutive playoff seasons and four in five years, the San Francisco 49ers collapsed last year with a 6-11 record. As a result, head coach Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers have plenty of work to do in the offseason. Despite the setback campaign, the 49ers are not long shots with the 2025 NFL future Odds. Quarterback Brock Purdy remains the starter and is expected to cash in with a big contract soon. Thus, the 49ers are trying to clear salary cap space to accommodate him. How that factors into the 2025 offseason remains to be seen.

2025 San Francisco 49ers NFL Draft Team Preview

At the onset, the offseason of Brock Purdy has arrived. The 49ers failed to secure a Super Bowl title during the discount window of Purdy’s rookie contract (four years, $3.7 million). As he approaches the final year of that deal, Purdy is due one of the biggest pay raises in league history. Correlate that the 49ers are fully expected to give him that raise. General manager John Lynch said negotiations are ongoing, he told reporters at the NFL scouting combine.

So, how big of a raise will Purdy secure? Consider that Tua Tagovailoa ($53.1M), Trevor Lawrence ($55M), Jordan Love ($55M), and Jared Goff ($53M) have all signed recent extensions over $53 million annually. At the same time, Dak Prescott broke the bank with a $60 million annual salary with the contract he signed in September.

Where Purdy falls on that online betting spectrum will be up to him and the 49ers. Certainly, he won’t come cheap after leading his team to a Super Bowl and two NFC championship games in his first three seasons as a pro. In turn, his impending contract has already forced the Niners to make financial sacrifices. Starting with the team agreeing to trade star receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. The deal is effectively a salary dump for San Francisco.

Of course, there’s plenty more to address in a critical 49ers offseason, but everything else is secondary to Purdy. At the beginning, the 49ers enter the 2025 NFL futures offseason with an estimated $33 million in salary cap space. Still, that is in the lower half of the NFL. Trading Samuel resulted in a significant cap hit. And Purdy’s presumed deal will eat up a significant portion of the remaining space.

San Francisco 49ers 2025 NFL Draft Summary

San Francisco’s top three needs: DT, Edge, OT. The 49ers released both of last year’s starting defensive tackles (Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins) and made no additions in free agency. As a result, they are leaving two significant holes on the defensive interior. Also, they cut ties with edge rusher Leonard Floyd, who started all 17 games this past season. Thus, they created an opening for a new starter opposite Nick Bosa.

While the Niners return both starting offensive tackles (Trent Williams and Colton McKivitz), Williams will be 37 in July and McKivitz is entering the final year of his contract. That means the 49ers are on the lookout for a tackle who could potentially compete for a guard job before moving to tackle permanently.

Namely, the prospect to fill a need outside Round is Jordan Burch, Edge, Oregon. Bosa is the only 49ers edge rusher who can be counted on. Burch is a hybrid edge who has plenty of explosive power to play off the edge or move inside in sub-packages.
