Recent Super Bowl Odds

Super Bowl odds recently have shown some interesting trends.

As we look at the Super Bowl odds for Super Bowl XLIII there are some interesting numbers to consider. Let’s take a look.

Super Bowl odds show that the Pittsburgh Steelers are favored by a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals with a total of 46.5. In recent seasons the under has been the way to go in Super Bowl odds with the last four games going under the total. This is a reversal as many of the previous Super Bowls had gone over the Super Bowl odds. Looking at the Super Bowl betting total in this year’s game we see a number of 46.5. Pittsburgh has the #1 defense in the NFL but the Steelers were still a slight over team on the season. The Cardinals have one of the worst defenses in the NFL and they were a big over team this season. The last three seasons have seen Arizona go over the total about two thirds of the time. Pittsburgh is also somewhat of an over team, especially in the playoffs. 12 of the last 14 Pittsburgh playoff games have gone over the total.

If you are a gambler that loves parlays then Super Bowl odds are for you. In the 80’s, 90’s and early this decade the favorite and the over was the way to go in Super Bowl odds. That has changed recently since the last four Super Bowls have gone under the Super Bowl odds total. The favorite and under parlay has won two of the last three years in Super Bowl odds.

The key number for teams that win the Super Bowl seems to be 27. Teams that score 27 or more points in the Super Bowl are an amazing 24-3-1 against the Super Bowl betting pointspread. Arizona averaged 26.7 points per game this season but they are facing the #1 defense in the NFL. The Steelers averaged 21.7 points per game but they are facing a weak Arizona defense. Teams that scored 20 points or less in the Super Bowl are a very poor 8-31-1 against the Super Bowl odds.

As you look at Super Bowl odds remember that the 7-points don’t mean a whole lot. Only seven times in Super Bowl betting history has the pointspread come into play. If you think the Cardinals can cover the 7 points then you should bet them on the money line as well in Super Bowl odds.
