Recap – 49ers Win Over Chargers but Face Tough Qestions

On Sunday, one of the 2014 NFL Preseason games brought together the San Diego Chargers against the San Francisco 49ers with the 49ers struggling but still managing to win the game 21-7. They scored 10 points in the second quarter and 11 points in the final quarter, while the Chargers were only able to muster 7 points in the first quarter.

If you look at the fact that QB Kaepernick of the 49’ers was sacked three times, you would think the San Francisco could not have won the game as the Chargers defense limited the 49ers QB before he left the game and back up Gilbert entered. With only two weeks before the regular season, the offense of the 49ers seem shaky but was still able to win the game on Sunday.

Possibly due to the 6.0 magnitude earthquake that hit the Napa Valley early in the morning was reason for some tens of thousands empty stadium seats and the quake did have an effect on the transportation options for getting to this new $1.2 billion Levi Stadium which showed evidence of the new sod being put in place at certain areas prior to the start of this game.

The scoring in the game started with a 1st quarter TD pass from Chargers QB Rives to Gates for 10 yards and extra point by Novak and a 7-0 lead, then in the second quarter Dawson of 49ers kicked a 39 yard field goal making it 7-3, then 49er QB Gabbert threw a 6 yard pass to McDonald and extra point kick with score now 7-10, in the fourth quarter 49’ers Dawson kicked a 28 yard field goal making it 13-7 49’ers. In the fourth quarter 49’ers RB Winston ran for 27 yards and a TD, then 49ers QB Johnson passed to Lewis for two points and the final score 21 49’ers and 7 Chargers.

The two starting QB’s left the game early in the first half with Chargers QB Rivers 9 for 10 passing and completed his first 5 of 6 throws and total yardage for the 10 passes was 85 yards. 49ers QB Kaepernick was 6 of 12 for a total of 59 yards during his tenure while QB Gabbert was 7 of 11 for 66 yards and a TD.

In the past 5 NFL preseason games with the San Diego Chargers and the San Francisco 49ers the 49ers have won all the games and they will face each other again in a regular season game in Week 16 that takes place on the 20th of December 2014.
