At the onset of the 2025 offseason, the Dallas Cowboys have a new head coach but the same problems with the NFL future Odds. Mike McCarthy is out after five seasons and three playoff appearances. He departed with the fourth-best win percentage in franchise history, but his playoff flops will not be forgotten. In addition to postseason humiliation was the missing the playoffs in 2024. Injuries were indeed a major part of Dallas’ misery in 2024. But the real problem heading into the draft is owner Jerry Jones.

2025 Dallas Cowboys NFL Draft Team Preview
Indeed, it is another blockbuster offshore betting offseason in Dallas. While 2024 featured considerable fanfare and late-landing extensions for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, 2025 is the offseason of Micah Parsons. To illuminate, Parsons is approaching the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. Also, he is due an extension that could make him the highest-paid defender in football.
In sum, he’ll make $24 million in 2025 on his fifth-year option after averaging $4.3 million per year over the first four years of his rookie contract. His annual salary via an extension — if one is worked out — will dwarf his previous income. Consider that Maxx Crosby is the highest-paid defender in the NFL with an average annual salary of $35.5 million.
The Cowboys didn’t work out deals with Prescott and Lamb last offseason until after training camp. They’d presumably like to settle Parsons’ future sooner this offseason. But at these stakes alongside spinning plates in Dallas, there’s no telling how long a deal will take. Of major concern is that not getting one done runs the risk of broaching the franchise tag in 2026.
Following the restructuring of the contracts of both Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, they’re up to about $56 million in salary cap space after starting the offseason in the red. Now we’ll see what they do with all the newfound 2025 NFL futures flexibility.
Cowboys 2025 NFL Draft Summary
Consider that Cowboys fans might lose their minds if the Jones family goes back-to-back drafts, neglecting the running back position. Draft pundits are high on running backs this season, giving Dallas more reasons not to be content with a backfield that currently features Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders.
Also, the Cowboys will need to find a replacement for the recently retired Zack Martin, one of the best guards of the past decade. But the Cowboys have more problems on the defensive side, especially because they have struggled with finding quality run defenders at defensive tackle and linebacker.
Accordingly, the top three needs for Dallas are at RB, WR, and CB. The Cowboys added Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders in free agency, but running back remains a high priority. This is a deep draft class at the position, which means they might not have to lock into one at No. 12 overall.
Additionally, Dallas is looking for a No. 2 receiver opposite CeeDee Lamb and has issues at cornerback, even with the trade for 2022 first-round pick Kaiir Elam. Trevon Diggs’ availability for the start of the season is in question following left knee surgery, and nickel corner Jourdan Lewis signed with Jacksonville.
The Prospect to fill a need outside Round 1 could be Jaydon Blue, RB, Texas. If the Cowboys opt to wait on a running back, Blue has an explosive skill set as a runner and receiver that would work well with free agent additions Sanders and Williams. Specifically, as an outside slasher, Blue reportedly clocked in the high 4.2s at Texas’ pro day.
