Quarterback Rotations for 2010 NFL Preseason Betting

NFL preseason betting success is oftentimes all about finding the teams with the best quarterback rotations. This is not the regular season where the starting quarterback plays the entire game. The outcome of NFL preseason odds is sometimes determined by the third or fourth string quarterbacks.

NFL preseason betting odds usually have small point spreads.  The difference between a win and a loss in the preseason can come down to how well a third string quarterback plays.  Which teams have the best quarterback rotations for 2010?  What teams have the worst?  Let’s take a look.

The Miami Dolphins have a very good quartet of quarterbacks. Chad Henne is the starter while Chad Pennington is the backup. There are not many backup quarterbacks in the NFL better than Pennington.  The third stringer is Tyler Thigpen and he was starting in Kansas City.  Even the fourth string quarterback Pat White has seen playing time.

The New York Jets may not have any great quarterbacks but they have a lot of depth.  Mark Sanchez is the starter and the team recently signed Mark Brunell to be the backup.  They also have Kellen Clemens who has started in the NFL along with Erik Ainge.

The Oakland Raiders could really be a team to follow vs. the NFL preseason odds. They have a very solid four man rotation at quarterback. Jason Campbell will be the starter while the three other quarterbacks have all started in the NFL. Kyle Boller, Charlie Frye and Bruce Gradkowski are quality backups who can make plays.

What about the teams you don’t want to be following in the preseason?  The Chicago Bears have a solid starter in Jay Cutler but not much behind him. Do you really want the outcome of your wager to be determined by Brett Basanez, Caleb Hanie, Mike Teel or Dan LeFevour? The Indianapolis Colts have a similar problem. They have Peyton Manning as the starter and he won’t get much playing time. The backups are Curtis Painter, Tom Brandstater, Tim Hiller and Drew Willy. The Philadelphia Eagles have Kevin Kolb as the starter but Michael Vick has shown nothing as the backup and the other two quarterbacks are Mike Kafka and Joey Elliot.

As you make NFL preseason bets this season remember to pay close attention to the quarterback rotations.
