NFL Gamblers Expect Philadelphia Eagles to Fly in 2023

Overall, the Philadelphia Eagles created quite a stir during the 2023 NFL draft. They were the only team whose Super Bowl odds changed from the start of the draft. To illuminate, the Eagles jumped from to +850. Cause by a haul that included Georgia standouts Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, and Kelee Ringo. Also, Philadelphia traded for another former Bulldog, running back D’Andre Swift. NFL odds analysts were wowed. Yet the biggest reaction may have come from Dallas Cowboys star edge rusher Micah Parsons. Specifically, Parsons couldn’t hide his angst when Carter went ninth overall to Philadelphia.

The history of NFC teams falling short in the Super Bowl and returning to the game the following year is scant. The last team to pull it off was the 1974 Minnesota Vikings. Philadelphia faces an offseason that was supposed to be marked by significant sportsbook loss in free agency. Instead, the Eagles’ efforts developed into an intriguing retooling, generating optimism that the Eagles are well-positioned to buck the trend.

Philadelphia Eagles 2023 Roster Analysis

In 2022 Jalen Hurts remained on a rookie contract. And the Eagle roster was loaded with talent from top to bottom. Last season the Eagles had the luxury of easing the 2022 draft class. It was a sportsbook group headlined by defensive tackle Jordan Davis, center Cam Jurgens, and linebacker Nakobe Dean.

Since then, the landscape has shifted. Hurts signed a five-year, $255 million extension in April. While anticipating that large investment, Eagles management let notable contributors like Gardner-Johnson, Javon Hargrave, and Miles Sanders walk.

General manager Howie Roseman said the organization entered the NFL betting odds offseason with its eyes open and understanding that it had to flip it. Specifically, the Eagles needed some younger, less expensive players on the team.

While the roster remains in strong shape overall, there is a heightened urgency for this draft class to contribute in 2023. Starting with Carter, a first-team All-American who could have been a top-five pick if not for some off-field concerns.

Certainly, Hargrave’s absence (he signed a four-year, $84 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers in free agency) needs to be accounted for. Last year, Hargrave was one of the Eagles’ best players, posting 11 sacks.

Namely, Fletcher Cox, 32, shouldn’t be expected to carry all the defensive line weight at this career stage. Jalen Carter is projected to play right away. And he will be counted on to shore things up along the interior with the likes of Davis and Milton Williams.

Nolan Smith was frequently compared to Haason Reddick during the pre-draft process. Hence, he can move into the No. 2 SAM linebacker role behind him and be part of the pass-rush rotation. Steen could compete with Jurgens for the starting right guard spot. Sydney Brown can contribute at safety. While Kelee Ringo, Tanner McKee, and Moro Ojomo will provide depth in their respective positions.

Following a 14-3 showing in the regular season, the defending NFC champion Eagles will play a first-place schedule this year. Their 2023 opponents had a collective win percentage of .567 last season, tops in the NFL. Of great concern to gamblers is that everything may have gone too smoothly for the 2022 Eagles.
