First it must clearly be stated that few NFL teams are as inept as the Jets. Their lone NFL betting moment of glory occurred in January of 1969. Certainly it ranks as one of the most monumental wins in sports history. As a matter of fact it was the biggest upset in the history of pro football. Super Bowl III saw the Jets upset the Colts 16-7. Counter to division rival New England the Jets are an NFL betting enigma. While they went 5-11 straight up they covered nine times last year. Of major concern is seven consecutive seasons out of the playoffs. Increasingly doubts mount against head coach Todd Bowles. More emphatically he seems in over his head as a NFL head coach. However the Jets problems extend far beyond the unfortunate Bowles. Owner Woody Johnson has owned the team since 2000. Summing up his tenure, Johnson has presided over a tease.
The Johnson Era
The Johnson era has flirted with a Super Bowl occasionally. Moreover, they made AFC championship games. Yet they were never good enough to finish. Especially frustrating were the Rex Ryan years. Ryan was coach for those two AFC title shots. In particular he was outclassed on the biggest stage. Equally important was the Jets offensive ineptitude. Of course, New York has continued their sportsbook woes since Ryan left. By reason of poor management, the franchise continues to flounder. Equally important is that no relief appears to be in sight.
Fans Expect Improvement
General manager Mike Maccagnan and Bowles must generate improvement. Johnson’s son Christopher is now acting owner. While playoffs are not mandatory evidence of a tangible rebuilding results are. Up against the tandem was a stripped-down roster last year. Consequently, losses were to be expected. Ownership understood that all along. Thus, Maccagnan and Bowles can stay if wins increase. To show ascending fortunes the rock bottom look must be vanquished.
Sam Darnold
Among reasons for optimism is Sam Darnold. To begin with he was the third player taken in the 2018 NFL Draft. More emphatically he is labeled as the Jets quarterback of the future. Starting with Maccagnan the franchise is thrilled to welcome Darnold. Simultaneously the Jets believe he is emblematic of their changing fortunes. Darnold seems to be a good fit for offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates. Accordingly Bates’ west coast offense should match Darnold’s skill set. Even so the offensive line was horrible last year. Also lacking is a game breaking running back. Josh McCown currently remains starting QB.
Matchup to Watch
Darnold is not expected to start immediately. Defensively the team is average. Regardless the Jets will be consistent NFL betting underdogs. Accordingly, they will miss the playoffs for the eighth straight year. In short six wins would make for a good year.
