Jets Plotting Takeoff in 2021, Odds & Predictions

To be exact, Super Bowl III remains one of the historic days in sports history. The New York Jets beat the Baltimore Colts 16-7 at 18-point dogs in January 1969. Jets quarterback Joe Namath guaranteed victory and delivered. But for Jets fans, that pinnacle season was 53 years ago. Since then, New York has consistently bombed with the NFL odds. In 2018 the Jets drafted Sam Darnold as their quarterbacking savior. Since then, Darnold escaped to the Carolina Panthers. Enter Zach Wilson, the second overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft out of BYU

2021 New York Jets SBG Odds Overview

Overall, New York has the online betting advantage of low expectations. Any success will be more than fans, media or gamblers expect. Thus, wagering value is possible to find.

2021 New York Jets Team Overview

On the whole, Zach Wilson is tasked with becoming the quarterback that Darnold never became. To be fair, Darnold didn’t have a lot of help. And neither does Wilson. At the onset of his career, anyway.

Keeping in the spirit of newness is head coach Robert Saleh. Certainly, Saleh is an upgrade from the buffoonery of Adam Gase. Perhaps someday, the Jets will reach their peak of 53 years ago under Saleh. However, it’s not going to happen this year. Saleh’s defensive background is needed in New York. The Jets ranked 24th for total defense and 26th for points allowed in 2020.

Saleh is the respected defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers (2017-2020). He arrives as the latest man trying to get the Jets off the ground. Only two coaches in Jets’ history departed with a winning record. Hall of Famer Bill Parcells posted a .604-win percentage in three seasons. And then his successor Al Groh went .563 in his only campaign. Even Super Bowl III champion Weeb Ewbank could muster only a .481 career win percentage with the Jets. To show, Saleh is defying some serious history.

Zach Wilson arrives from BYU as the man touted to be the next Steve Young. Cause by Wilson’s ability to run and pass like Young, who was also out of BYU. In like manner to Saleh, Wilson is defying some very negative history. And without a good supporting cast, no quarterback has a chance in the NFL. Just ask Sam Darnold. One positive for Wilson is that the Jets’ offensive line is not that bad.

Perhaps one of the best values of the 2021 NFL Draft is running back Michael Carter of North Carolina. The Jets got him with the 107th pick. Carter was a big producer for the Tar Heels. Most important of all, he can keep defenses honest.

The second week’s action brings the home opener against the New England Patriots. This game will likely be an interesting matchup of two first-round 2021 NFL Draft picks. Namely, Mac Jones will be given every chance to win the Patriots’ QB job. Zach Wilson is a fait accompli to start for the Jets.
