2018 New York Giants Review

Last year the Giants finished 5-11 straight up, 8-7-1 vs. the odds, and 9-7 over the total. New York finished 17th for total offense and 16th for scoring. The defense was even worse ranking 24th overall and 23rd for points allowed. A 1-7 start ended the betting on NFL season before it really began. Following that was a nice 4-1 run. But three straight losses to end the season proved to be a buzz kill.

Shurmur Murmurs

First-year head coach Pat Shurmur had a rough baptism by fire as head coach. He arrived after a strong 2017 season as Minnesota offensive coordinator. In fact, he was named NFL Assistant Coach of the Year for that performance. He is also remembered for a brief and bad two-year stint as Cleveland head coach. There he posted records of 4-12 and 5-11. Fashion that Shurmur has been tasked with getting the offense back up to par. That and prepare the Giants quarterback of the future.

Dan the Man

Extending the sports betting intrigue for the Giants season is a first-round draft pick, Daniel Jones. Jones was the sixth overall player taken in the draft. While at Duke Jones threw for 8201 yards in three seasons with a 52/29 TD/INT ratio. Last year he was named Most Valuable Player of the Independence Bowl. Also, he was MVP of the Senior Bowl. Despite his credentials, his selection was panned by nearly everyone. The skepticism was based on the belief that better quarterbacks were available. And that Jones was a reach.

Manning Up

Certainly, veteran quarterback Eli Manning is a future Hall of Famer. To show he is a two-time Super Bowl champion and MVP. After a horrible 2013 season in which he threw 27 interceptions with a 69.4 rating, he returned to form. Manning posted a 92.4 rating with a 21/11 TD/INT ratio and 4299 yards in 2018. However, the fact remains that the end is near and New York is eyeing the future with Jones.

Barkley Emerges

Counter to the misery of the Giants season was the great rookie season of Saquon Barkley. In 2018 he ran for 1307 yards, 5.0 yards per carry and 11 touchdowns. Barkley demonstrated that he will be a betting on NFL asset going forward. Just as important he will keep enemy defenses honest.
