At the onset of camp, the question is whether or not Trey Lance will be the starting quarterback for the entire season. Lance is listed as the starter on the depth chart over Jimmy Garoppolo. Of course, Jimmy G led the 2019 49ers to the NFC championship. And then, in 2021, he led a great playoff run that ended in the NFC championship game.
Garoppolo won over his teammates last year by triumphing over injuries. Jimmy G battled injuries all year and pulled out impressive playoff wins at the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers. But Lance is much more of a dual-threat quarterback, which appeals to the 49ers. Of great concern is that Lance lacks the NFL experience of Garoppolo. Further, Garoppolo is on the trading block. He is not expected to see much if any preseason action.
