Since 1969, the Pittsburgh Steelers have had only three head coaches, making them one of the most stable sports franchises. The Rooney family has always owned the Steelers and has been a model example of NFL future odds sports ownership. Concurrently, head coach Mike Tomlin is the third man in the string of coaches. Tomlin has the Vince Lombardi-like accomplishment of never having had a losing season in his career as an NFL head coach. Since the 2010 season, when Pittsburgh lost to the Green Bay Packers, Tomlin’s Steelers have not made it back to the Super Bowl.

In his second season as head coach, Tomlin led the Steelers to the 2008 Super Bowl championship. However, for Pittsburgh fans, Tomlin’s shelf life is expiring. And with an unsettled quarterback situation as training camp prepares for the 2025 campaign, optimism is not high. The Steelers made a massive offshore bookmaker move back in March. To illustrate, they sent a second-round pick to Seattle in exchange for two-time Pro Bowl wideout DK Metcalf. Also, Pittsburgh signed four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers.
Pittsburgh was determined to improve its physicality after rushing 299 yards in January’s playoff loss to Baltimore. Specifically, it was the Steelers’ fifth straight loss to close out the 2024 season. The Steelers have accomplished that this offseason with the additions of Metcalf, first-round pick Derrick Harmon, Darius Slay, Brandin Echols, Malik Harrison, rookie DT Yahya Black, and fellow rookie Jack Sawyer. Sawyer recorded one of the biggest plays in Ohio State history when he returned his forced fumble 83 yards for a score in the Cotton Bowl.
Also, the Steelers added physicality with the third-round selection of running back Kaleb Johnson. Johnson appears to be a mix of former Steelers Pro Bowlers Le’Veon Bell and Najee Harris.
Additionally, the Steelers have turned over their quarterback room. While they continued to wait for Rodgers, the Steelers had a good 2025 NFL futures contingency plan in place. Starting with Rudolph (the only Steelers quarterback to start in a playoff game since Roethlisberger’s retirement) and rookie Will Howard, who is fresh off leading Ohio State to a national title.
In 1972, the franchise experienced a dramatic turnaround that has endured to this day. Pittsburgh made the playoffs as the AFC Central champions. To illustrate, in the 1972 AFC Divisional Playoffs, the Steelers defeated the Oakland Raiders with the famed “Immaculate Reception.” The franchise took off with eight consecutive playoff appearances and four Super Bowl titles.
