Football Odds: Do Bears Take NFL Betting Step Back in 2019?

2019 Chicago Bears Futures Odds for Super Bowl LIV

At the onset of the 2018 season the Chicago Bears faced low NFL betting expectations.  Justifiably so.  New head coach Matt Nagy’s arrival meant a rebuilding season of misery to most.  In comparison Minnesota and Green Bay were touted as the NFC North favorites.  Chicago hadn’t been to the playoffs since 2010 when they lost the NFC championship game.  In fact, they posted only one winning season since that run.  Nagy and the Bears then stunned the pro football world.  Chicago dominated as NFC North champions with a 12-4 record.  Was it a fluke or the future?

Chicago Bears 2018 Review

Overall the Bears posted an NFL betting record of 12-4 straight up, 12-4 against the spread and 8-8 on totals.   Cause by this was a playoff home game against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.  Philadelphia got the wining touchdown with 56 seconds to go.  In sum it was a 16-15 Eagles win and cover as 6.5-point dogs.  Chicago’s Cody Parkey missed a 43-yard field goal at the gun.  Yet it was a banner season in the Windy City.  But was it for real?  And what comes next?

Offensively Offensive

In comparison to the other playoff teams the Bears offense was not up to par.  Defense was the offshore betting strength of the team.  Chicago ranked first in the NFL for points allowed.  Of great concern was the inconsistency on offense.  Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky showed vast improvement as the starter.  However, he also has plenty of room for more.  Nagy tossed 12 interceptions last year and that can be decreased.  Correspondingly the big question in St. Louis is if Nagy can take the “next step?”  Correlate that goes for the entire Bears team.

In the Face of Super Expectations for the Chicago Bears

Namely Chicago is a Bears town.  Blackhawks and Cubs success thrilled the City of Broad Shoulders for sure.  But nothing brings out the passion of Chicago like the Monsters of the Midway.  New Defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano faces the challenge of maintaining the unit’s excellence.  Pagano takes over a highly talented unit.  Of great concern is new terminology that the players will have to learn.  The good news is that reportedly players have picked up on it quickly.

Nagy’s Challenge

Commencing with training camp set to open soon Nagy is not backing down.  He fully embraces the high expectations.  Nagy demands that his group stay confident.  Along the same lines he will not tolerate cockiness.  Super Bowl expectations are abuzz in Chicago.  Nagy has created a monster.  Indeed, the quick results in his first year could blow up into a problem.  The season opener at home against Green Bay will set a tone.

Matchup to Watch

In this situation the Bears have gone from a hunter to the hunted.  Minnesota is a beaten favorite primed for a potential bounce back.  Green Bay has new leadership to make a final NFL betting charge.  By reason of the Bears going from 5-11 to 12-4 is fear of a value drop.
