Last week, the Green Bay Packers went all in for a Super Bowl championship. Green Bay acquired EDGE rusher Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys. Detroit Lions Team Overview
The Lions have ranked in the top four of yardage in each of the past three years. Yet, there’s reason to be concerned about how they’ll play on this side of the ball this upcoming season. Part of the reason would be Ben Johnson’s departure. The brilliant offensive coordinator took the head-coaching job in Chicago. So Detroit will miss his creative play-calling. Johnson was able to get the most out of his players, and it’s unclear how his replacement, John Morton, will do.
Many offensive starters will be back for the Lions. Including Jared Goff and his receivers. Although Goff had a great 2024 season, he wilted in the playoff loss to the Redskins. Goff has an online betting history of struggling in the postseason. So this wasn’t too much of a surprise. It remains to be seen if Goff can ever get over the hump and lead his team to the Super Bowl.
As mentioned earlier, the Lions are considered one of the Super Bowl favorites. But this seems to be a mistake. Consider that Detroit lost both coordinators, as well as two interior offensive linemen. So they won’t play as well in 2025 as they did last year. Also, they suffered lots of injuries last season.
Perhaps they’ll be healthier in 2025, but that could be a sign of bad training. And if the players aren’t 100 percent, there could be more injuries. The Lions could experience some temporary regression before bouncing back in 2026.
Green Bay Packers Team Overview
About 30 years ago, the Packers landed the best pass rusher in the NFL in free agency. His name was Reggie White. Correlate that he helped Brett Favre win a Super Bowl. Now, history is a bit different this time, with Micah Parsons being acquired via a trade. But Green Bay has obtained arguably the best pass rusher in the league.
In sum, this is a tremendous trade for the Packers, who automatically become one of the top Super Bowl contenders in the NFC. Their pass rush was mediocre last year, and it was something they didn’t really address this offseason.
The Packers appeared poised to make a deep run into the playoffs last year before Christian Watson suffered a torn ACL. In turn, Matthew Golden’s presence could compensate for the loss. Of course, Golden is only a rookie, so he may not be the solution the Packers need. Either way, Green Bay will be competitive within the division and could reach the playoffs once again.
